Grabbing the golden book

McVay Principal Keith Leintz accepted a "Golden Book" award from a costumed Hagan Principal Darla Ratzak on Tuesday. The award — and Ratzak's costume — were part of a friendly competition between the two schools to see whose students could read the most minutes during February.

McVay students read 160,586 minutes to the 117,423 minutes that Hagan students read. This is the first year for the award, but McVay Elementary Librarian Terri Firth and Hagan Elementary Librarian Lesley Allen hope to expand the competition to all the district's elementary schools next year.

"In the future, we'll have that going back and forth between more schools," Allen said of the award.
